You're on your own for advice on finding pinball around Berkshire. I'm a few thousand miles away from there. 
There is no "best" pinball machine, just as there is no "best" car or "best" food or "best" anything -- it's all a matter of personal preferences. In relative terms, the last biggest-selling pinball was Addams Family, though that was 16 years ago.
Pinball emulators: Basically that means one of the various flavors of PinMAME. Check out their installation guide, it assumes very little computer knowledge and leads you through step-by-step. Good luck!
