How Do I Stop Ants from Getting Into My House?
What an amazing creature the little ant is! Over 8000 species are known throughout the world. Ants are even mentioned in the Bible as teaching us lessons about working hard, planning ahead, and preparing for the future. Yes, there is a lot we can learn from ants.
But no one wants ants in their cupboard, in play areas, in the house at all (unless you have an ant farm). Yet, how to get rid of ants often seems to be an enigma.
Let’s discuss some safe and reliable methods of keeping ants out of the house. There are things we can do without chemicals. Don’t leave sticky jars out that would attract ants, vacuum often especially in areas ants are seen, caulk potential entry points, and keep food items off the floor and counter. Ant traps are available at most hardware stores and can be effective with small problems. You can catch ants with sticky strips placed where they march. But, as successful as these might be, they don’t deal with the source of the problem.
Real success comes when the queen is removed. This is because the colony’s life depends on her. To get rid of her, you must locate the nest. Track the ants. Try to figure out where they are going when they have some food item. Check for converging locations that may indicate the location of the nest.
Now that you know where it is you can remove it. This can normally be done only by spraying. Here are some of the common outdoor nest insecticides: bifenthrin as granules, permethrin as a liquid or granules, acephate as a liquid, carbaryl as a liquid or granules, and cyfluthrin as granules. Be sure the nest is soaked for ants are able to dig deeply, out of reach of a light treatment. Treating the nest with gasoline, with fire, or trying to drown it with water does not usually solve the problem.
Plan B is to spray the exterior of the house with contact insecticides. Some common ones are carbaryl as a liquid or granules, permethrin as a liquid or granules, bifenthrin as a liquid, deltamethrin as a dust, and cyfluthrin as granules. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label.
