So you know where I'm originating from, I'm replacing a 50" Samsung plasma. I have a variety of various sized flat panels at home and a home theater in the basement. I just had our 720p Mitsy projector replaced which has a Sony (STR-DA3600ES) along with Avatar on Blu-Ray blew me away (108" tv screen). I consider myself a great enthusiast, but in no way a pro. Anyway, onward...
Out of the package experience - Fantastic. The box is beautiful, the instructions on the top tell you how to be able to easily (for a really big TV) unnecessary the clips and sleeve-off the box.
Set up - Could not be simpler. Quick start guide is actually accurate. Instructions manual is inside English only, not 7 languages, and is plainly published, not some computer converted Chinese. I couldn't get the Vizio remote to manipulate the DirecTV box however. Will have to search for a code I suppose. Not a biggie. Will get it. (Edit: Thanks to AVS Online community, someone pointed out I have to have my receiver set to RF mode in Remote device set up. I changed it to be able to IR, and voilà, all set. I had to "Try The subsequent Code" to get approximately Code 4. All set). Luckily, my 2-year old receiver is 3D ready : HR21-700. DirecTV said just "plug the idea in, the receiver will walk you throughout the set up once the item recognizes the 3D TV". Not quite right, for me anyway, but a restart on the receiver and I was installed and operating.
2D-HD - I commenced with Kill Bill 2 on TNTHD and yes it looked great. Some HD looks superior to others, not surprisingly. For example, 30 Rock must use some form of softening lens.
AppleTV (720p) - YouTube looks a little better than I thought it'd. From Apple's movie list, previews of 300 and the Bucket List looked sharpened. Netflix streaming looked as good as it did on our 50" Sammy, and that's a positive thing. Photos from Mobile Me personally via my iPhone viewed great.
3D on DirecTV - Started with n3D, which I now realize is extremely analogous to Mark Cuban's HDNET in the early days involving HD. It's where you is going for the fun initial impression. A lot of scenic/nature articles. It impresses right away.
Family take - 11-year older boy loves it. Despicable Me in 3 dimensional is wow-ing him. 15-year old daughter also. I prefer the advanced glasses, but the kids like the basic ones. Daughter's friend was tickled the essential (flat) cups fit over her eye-glasses. Wife's first reaction ended up being good, then made a comment about this making her cross-eyed, then backed up along with liked it. She is also almost all impressed with Despicable Myself and says it seems less gimmicky than prior 3D experiences (where something just jumps out at you now and then).
3D sports - When i downloaded the National Championship game (Auburn versus Oregon) via DirecTV and although I'm keen on it better than the actual active shutter, I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer an ordinary crisp HD for athletics. I watch a ton of sports, and my initial reaction to sports in 3D together with both passive 3D (this set) and active 3D (additional available 3D technology) is mixed at this era.
Vizio 3D Blu-Ray participant - Started with Dinosaurs, IMAX Under The Seashore, Alice in Wonderland, and Polar Express. The player is quick and intuitive with all the Internet app screen as the main screen. Disney's Alice in Wonderland can be fabulous and I'm nearly all surprised by how attractive the image depths tend to be. IMAX Under The Sea has the cool IMAX 3D number countdown at the start - fun. The sea images give "whoa" reactions from the family. This is THE 3d images Blu-Ray to throw within first - Jim Carrey narrated as well as beautiful. The tech of the whole lot falls away after a few momemts and the experience is immersive after that. The player is sharp.
3D thoughts, as this set will be passive 3D (as opposed to active 3D)
Passive 3D gets anything right it claims, IMO. The glasses are lighting and easy. It's nice they are inexpensive (I bought10 twos of RealD glasses through Amazon for $25 10 - Pairs - Brand-new Sealed - 3D Round Polarized 3D Glasses identical to RealD for Disney Digital -Legend in the Guardians (10 Pairs) -they work wonderful). Also easy to stay and glance down at my lap top occasionally. I surely don't wish I was concerned with the active 3D syncing, battery life, and if someone is going to sit on them. My brother-in-law walked throughout and I tossed a couple glasses across the space. He slapped them about and said "Wow, that's awesome". He also has 3 kids under 6 years. No way he at any time buys $100 glasses (that is what the active model of 3D requires) with the bunch.;)
The knocks on passive 3D are a little over stated for me personally. You'll find these concerns if you surf around the world wide web researching 3D TV alternatives.
- Claim: "Black lines" - They're (barely) presently there, however, they only are appreciable when you get within 3-4 feet on the screen. I liken it for the screen door effect. If the TV is big enough and you also get close enough, you'll see them. This concern ended up like a no-big-deal item.
- Claim: "Turning head sideways damages the 3D" - nope. Not an issue.
- Claim: "The 3D-ness severely degrades having off-angle viewing" - Not for me. It does lessen a little though. Otherwise, walking around the room offers a yoyo-ing 3D image which in turn follows you. Cool.
- Claim: "Half resolution" thing - Didn't even occur to me when watching the item. No comments from household about less of anything in terms of picture quality goes.
- Claim: "Cross talk" - Certainly not seeing it. Maybe if some 1 pointed it out to me?
More thoughts...
It is high gloss and I can see where a heavily windowed room may very well be an issue. Fine for me with flanking windows as well as a (non-windowed) wall facing the television.
Make sure your space are designed for a 65-incher. I'd recommend being a minimum of 8 ft away, with 10+ ft currently being better. This thing is big.
I think I'm technically spoiled by HD and today 3D as standard def is getting harder to watch. Not sure if this is the TV or just myself.
Final thoughts...
My ordered list of priorities while i bought this TV were being size, price point, and then 3D. Well, the size is significantly (just not a little bit) larger than my 50-incher - check. The price was right at 3G's - examine. The 3D has definitely exceeded my expectations : check. The 2D has met my hopes for the reason that I'm very happy with the black levels (although they are not as deep being a plasma). For me, this is a fantastic gen-
Vizio 3D TV. I'm sure future years brings 4K2K and improved technology, but at a cost. For today, this hit the place and was an incremental improvement over my 2-yr outdated Samsung plasma.
Update (7/5/11) - After 5 months, I had to revisit and bump my status from 4 to 5 stars. Long gone are the periods of over-analyzing this TELLY. The longer I bought it, the more I appreciate it. No regrets. (Tip: Get Tron Legacy 3d. O-M-G).
